Biography:
Christina Wang, M.D

 

Dr. Christina Wang was born in Nanjing, China and received her medical education at the University of Hong Kong (MBBS). She obtained her postgraduate training in Medicine and Endocrinology in Hong Kong and Australia. After serving positions as Lecturer and Reader, at the Department of Medicine of the University of Hong Kong, in 1988 she became Professor of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong. In 1989, Dr. Wang accepted a position as Director, Andrology Services at the Division of Endocrinology/Metabolism and the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology/Infertility at Cedars Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles. At the same time, she became a Professor of Medicine at the UCLA School of Medicine. She assumed her current position as Program Director of the General Clinical Research Center and a faculty member of the Division of Endocrinology in 1993. She is the co-director of the WHO Collaborative Center in Human Reproductions (since 1993), Mellon Reproductive Biology Center (since 1996) and the Contraceptive Clinical Trials Network of the NICHD (since 2004) at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.

Dr. Wang's research interest is on Male reproductive endocrinology in general with emphasis on: male hormonal contraception, androgen replacement therapy, androgen metabolism, endocrinology of aging, androgen assays, and semen quality and infertility. Dr. Wang has authored over 190 peer-reviewed publications in Endocrinology mainly on male reproductive biology including efficacy and risks of androgens, hormonal male contraception, germ cell apoptosis regulation, and reproductive aging. Her research is well supported by grants from the NIH and other Federal agencies. She has contributed over 50 chapters in books including Cecil's and Kelly's Textbooks of Medicine and Campbell's Urology and edited a book on Male Reproductive Function. She is a world leader in efforts to develop a safe, effective, and reversible hormonal male contraceptive. As the Chairperson of the Task Force Methods for the Regulation of Male Fertility of the World Health Organization (WHO) from 1991 to 2002, she designed many multicenter trials including the development and oversight of the pivotal study establishing the contraceptive efficacy of hormonally induced suppression of spermatogenesis. She was a member and Chair of the expert group that edited the 3rd and 4th edition of the WHO Laboratory Manual on Semen Analyses, the gold standard for andrology laboratories throughout the world. She is a recognized world authority on Andrology and has been an invited keynote/ plenary/symposium speaker and distinguished lecturer at many national and international conferences. She has been a superb role model and mentor for many students, endocrinologists and andrologists throughout her career. Supported by several NIH grants from the NIGMS, she has aggressively advocated increased opportunities for women and underserved minorities in biomedical research.

Dr. Wang contributed her efforts in professional societies. She served on the editorial board of the International Journal of Andrology (1992-2002). She served on committees in many professional societies and most recently (June 2001), she was elected as Secretary of the International Society of Andrology and is the member of the Program Committee for the International Congress of Andrology in 2001 and 2005.
She served the ASA as a Council Member (1992-1995), a member on the awards committee (1997), member of the editorial board of the Journal of Andrology (1994-1997). She chaired the Post Graduate Course Committee for 1999 meeting and is the chair of the Program Committee for the 2005 meeting.
